My Dad and two uncles fought in World War II. My Dad served with the 28th Infantry Division in the Hurtgen Forest on the doorstep of Germany. The 28th ID caught Hell because the Germans were defending their homeland. The Hurtgen was the one of the worst battles of the war from the American perspective and my Dad was badly wounded. He never trusted any politician who promoted the notion of getting into another war but even so, he expected his sons, my brother Bill, a Marine ((70-71), and me, a US Army Paratrooper (69-72) to serve if called upon. War is a waste of lives and treasure. Now I don't trust politicians who promote war, either. All that said, I think young people, especially young men, should do some kind of national service, military or not. But we should damn well hold the politicians accountable when they get us involved in stupid, unwinnable conflicts. This short film and others by ParaLight Worx does a great service in humanizing young men seemingly trapped in awful circumstances. Although I dearly hope it never becomes necessary, there may come a time when Germans and Americans will have to fight side-by-side as NATO allies. I heartily support America's continued involvement with NATO. That may sound like a contradiction to my profession of skepticism about War but I do believe evil must be confronted with strength. I wish our friends in Europe Peace.

This film is very realistic, shot by people who went through the war. The reality was very inhuman and cruel.

Hollywood films about the war are complete nonsense. In general, it was interesting to look at the view of the war from the other side. The war brought a lot of grief and broke many destinies and lives. Only in the Wehrmacht there were not only Germans, but also Romanians, Italians, French and other Europeans. We have a German cemetery in our city. There was an SS commandant's office, the soldiers there were only Germans, and the Wehrmacht were mostly Romanians. There was a lot of brutality, all Jews and many Locals were shot, more than 10,000 people, children and women. In the war, every family has its own story and its own hero, its own pain. Our grandfathers and grandmothers said that there were decent people among the Germans, but this is an exception to the rule.

Maybe on the Western front was like in the movie: common famous music, friendship with the enemy, rainbow and unicorns. But on the Eastern front it was totally different situation. There is no family in Russia and all ex-soviet republics without WW2 scars. Till today we call that war «The Great Patriotic War» and say: «Nobody is forgotten. Nothing is forgotten». Also our movies, songs and books are about it.
